Day 2 - Naalehu to Volcano

Tonight's lodging is at Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) inside the Volcano National Park. It is run by the military as an R & R camp for all military personnel, their dependents and friends. Luckily, we fell into the friend category. A retired reservist friend sponsored our stay.

We rolled into the park at about 6:30 pm soaking wet and in the dark. Again, we looked like fireflys with our red blinkers but this time soaking wet as we looked for our assigned rooms. We expected our rooms to look like army barracks, BUT they looked better than most of the hotels we've stayed in. A 4 bedroom, 2 bath unit with refrigerator and microwave newly, furnished and carpeted.

KMC is a self contained camp in itself. Dinner was at the camp cafeteria serving an "eat all you can" Mexican buffet that night.

Doug rolls in courtesy of the 2 way radios

At past 8:30 PM, Doug was nowhere in sight. Thank god for the 2 way radios, we were able to get hold of him and guide him into KMC in the dark and rain . He was still a few miles away but we knew he was coming. The limited radio range made conversation a bit erratic. So long as we can hear him, we knew he was close. Before the cafeteria closed for the night, Doug rolls in with time to spare to eat a warm meal.

Today had been an interesting day. What was certain to be a shorter riding day turned into a day some felt to be harder than yesterday. It was no longer the miles nor the heat but the headwind, the mist and the rain. It was like riding in different climate zones all in one day. It was hard, but very interesting and challenging.

Maybe the comforts of KMC was the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow we saw earlier.
